BHA and Brisbane Metro: Delivering on Accessibility
BHA and our consumer volunteers are playing a crucial role in consulting with the local and state governments regarding the new Brisbane Metro project, ensuring that design input regarding hearing accessibility is adequately considered.
With the initial formation of a working group by Brisbane Metro in early 2019, which sought feedback from individuals with lived experience, BHA’s involvement underscores the project’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.
At the recent February 15 meeting, BHA and a group of volunteers convened at the Herston busway station to experience one of the first Metro vehicles firsthand. The test included sounds, signals, and hearing loop access for people with telecoil-enabled hearing aids.
By focusing on systems and sounds within the pilot vehicle, BHA seeks to provide valuable advice and feedback, emphasising the importance of considering hearing accessibility during the design phase of projects like Brisbane Metro.
Such proactive involvement ensures that the transportation infrastructure addresses congestion and travel demands and prioritises inclusivity and accessibility for all community members.
Brisbane Metro will be a key part of Brisbane’s greater transport network connecting the city to the suburbs. New high-capacity and high-frequency Brisbane Metro services will run along dedicated busways and link with suburban bus and train services as part of a better-planned network.
