Advocate for Accessible Communication During Disability Action Week!

From 24 November to 1 December 2024, Better Hearing Australia (BHA) is celebrating Queensland’s Disability Action Week with a campaign designed to highlight the transformative power of accessible communication. This year’s theme, “Accessible Communication: Connect, Include, Empower,” invites Queenslanders to share their stories and insights, fostering understanding, breaking down stigma, and inspiring change.

By contributing your voice to this initiative, you’re helping to build a more inclusive society and raise awareness about the importance of communication access for individuals with hearing loss.

How Can You Get Involved?

It’s simple: on social media share a video, a post or simply comment on one of our Disability Action Week posts to share your story about hearing loss and accessible communication to help connect, include and empower.

Post can be as simple or complicated as you want:

  • Record a short video talking about how hearing loss and accessible communication have impacted your life or community;
  • Take a selfie and write a brief statement on how hearing loss and accessible communication have impacted you; or
  • Simply comment on one of our Disability Action Week posts to share your story.

Send any submission to us at the details below or share your story direct to inspire others and help promote the value of connection and empowerment through inclusive practices.

If posting on your own channels please include the hashtags #BetterHearingBetterLiving and #DisabilityActionWeek

Submissions are welcome from everyone—whether you’re an individual with personal experiences, a professional, or an advocate working to improve hearing health services.

What Should You Share?

Your contribution can be personal, reflective, or professional. Here are some prompts to get you started:

  • Personal Story: “How has accessible communication connected you to others or empowered your life?”
  • Community Impact: “Why is accessible communication crucial for ensuring ‘Better Hearing Better Living’? How does it benefit society?”
  • Policy Insights: “What changes in public policy or support systems are needed to improve hearing health services in Queensland?”

For politicians or influencers, focus on the broader community impact of accessible communication and how it can shape inclusive policies and services.

Submission Details

Send your video or photo, along with your thoughts, to info@bhabrisbane.org.au ideally before 24 November 2024 but no later than 30 November.

Include your name and, if relevant, your title and organisation.

Submissions will be captioned by BHA and shared online during Disability Action Week.

Feel free to post your video or photo on your social media channels, too—just include the hashtags #BetterHearingBetterLiving and #DisabilityActionWeek.

Video Tips for an Engaging Submission

  • Lighting: Use natural light or soft indoor lighting. Keep the light source in front of you to ensure your face is well-lit.
  • Framing: Hold your phone vertically and position it at eye level. Frame yourself to include your face and shoulders, leaving a bit of space above your head.
  • Sound: Record in a quiet room, and if possible, use a microphone or headphones with a built-in mic. Speak clearly and maintain a steady tone.
  • Length: Keep your video between 15-45 seconds, focusing on one or two key points for clarity and impact.
  • Tone: Be natural and engaging. Your message can be personal, professional, or somewhere in between—just let your passion shine through!
